Mrs. Della Walley, Assistant Principal

My name is Della Walley, and I am honored to serve as Assistant Principal at J.T. Barber Elementary School. Originally from Jersey City, New Jersey, I proudly consider New Bern, North Carolina my second home.

I began my educational career eight years ago with Craven County Schools, where I have had the privilege of teaching middle grades Social Studies and English Language Arts. In addition to classroom instruction, I have served as an AVID  Site Coordinator and elective teacher at H.J. MacDonald Middle School, where I supported students in developing college/career readiness.During the  2025-2026 school year I was awarded Teacher of the Year for HJ MacDonald Middle School.

Academically  I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Master of Arts in Public Administration, Master of Science in Human Behavioral Studies, and a Master of Arts in School Administration. 

Outside of education, I am a proud military spouse. My husband is a retired Staff Sergeant of the United States Marine Corps, and I am also the proud mom to our beloved furbaby, Kizzy.

What excites me most about my role at J.T. Barber Elementary is the opportunity to empower teachers, support families, strengthen student achievement, and increase engagement across the school community.

I am especially energized by the opportunity to partner with students, staff, families, and the broader community to ensure every child thrives academically, socially, and creatively. 

Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to a school where excellence in teaching and learning is sustained, relationships are strong, and every student is empowered to succeed.
